WHAT DOES WELLNESS MEAN?

The global wellness institute defines wellness as “the active pursuit of activities, choices and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health”.

Wellness is all about making healthy choices and having healthy habits that you constantly practice. All these habits and choices therefore result in you feeling amazing both physically and mentally.

Wellness is also a very individual activity. It’s an intentional choice to form healthier habits in order for us to achieve optimal health in all areas of our lives.

Wellness is also more than just your physical health. It has so many dimensions such as – exercise, nutrition, sleep, managing stress, connecting with others, mindfulness and taking care of your mental health.

WHY WELLNESS IS IMPORTANT

Wellness is important because it has a direct impact on all areas of our lives. We all want to lead happy, fulfilling lives. Everything we do and everything we feel has a direct impact on our wellbeing.

Luckily, there are things you can do and choices you can make to work toward the healthy and fulfilling life you always wanted.

Of course, there will be challenges you face along the way, but focusing on your personal wellness will help you handle those challenges a lot easier.

Think about all the things that make you feel your best and all the wellness tips you’d like to add into your life and focus on them from here on out.

Here are 10 daily wellness tips that won’t cost you a penny!

Get enough sleep

Sleep is something that a lot of us struggle with. How often have you told yourself you’re going to bed, and 3 hours later it’s 1am and you’re still scrolling on your phone. But in the long run, a lack of sleep will take a toll on your health.

On average, most adults need 6-9 hours of sleep.

Try to put your phone down at least an hour before bed and create a relaxing night routine to ease you into a good night’s rest.

Stay hydrated

Start your day with a glass of water and continue drinking water throughout your day.

Water helps us to control calories, invigorate muscles, helps our kidneys and keeps us looking young and fresh (who doesn’t want that).

Practice mindfulness

Life can be really fast-paced. Often we get into the habit of constantly being on the go and not taking time to be in the present moment.

Being present will allow you to pay attention to your feelings and take in what’s going on in and around you – which can have a really positive impact on your mental health and wellbeing.

Mindfulness is all about allowing yourself to take in the present moment, which can allow us to positively change the way we see ourselves and enjoy the world around us.

Being mindful can also help you pay attention to things such as your stress levels and anxiety before it gets worse, so you can deal with them sooner and much better.

Mindfulness doesn’t have to take up all of your time, either. You can practice mindfulness in several ways, such as –

  • Taking a moment to stop, and pay attention to your breathing. Doing this can help you re-center yourself and help you feel calm, which is really useful, particularly when you’re having a stressful day or moment.
  • Observe your thoughts – Stop what you’re doing a pay attention to your thoughts.

Manage your stress levels with self-care

Life can be hectic and stressful and can have a major impact on your mental and physical health.

Pay attention to all the things that cause you stress, along with all the self-care activities that help you release that stress. Use those things to help you manage.

Have positive mindset

The way you think determines everything. If you’re constantly negative, those thoughts will play out in areas in your life.

When you find yourself with loads of negative thoughts, acknowledge them and battle them with some positive thoughts.

Listen to your body

Our bodies will always tell us when something isn’t quite right, take those hints on board. If you start feeling run down or have aches and pains, do whatever is necessary to tend to yourself.

That could mean going to the doctor, taking a day to rest, or changing your diet. Whatever it is, do it. It will benefit you in the long run and could also help prevent future illnesses or injuries.

Do things you enjoy

Try to do something you enjoy every day.

Whether it’s drawing, watching a funny film or cooking. Take the time out to do the things that genuinely make you happy.

Move your body

Try to move your body every day- whether it’s for 10 minutes or an hour.

It could be going for a walk, yoga, swimming, bike riding, or any type of exercise you like.

Have a healthy morning routine

Start your day off right with a morning routine that can help you set the tone for the rest of the day.

It could be a routine dedicated to planning, organisation, or relaxation. The choice is yours.

Create a morning routine that makes you feel at your best.

Take your vitamins

It’s hard to get all the nutrients and vitamins we need from food alone, so vitamins are there to give us a helping hand. It’s one of the easiest things you can do to take care of yourself.

You can start off with a multivitamin or visit your doctor for a blood test to see what vitamins you need.

Laugh daily

Laughter is medicine, it’s proven to have so many benefits to your health.

According to The Heart Foundation, daily laughter can help to reduce stress, strengthen your immune system and increase your blood flow.

So try your best each day to have a giggle.

Are you ready to implement these wellness tips?

I hope that’s a yes, and hopefully you found these wellness tips useful. You don’t have to commit to doing everything on this list, it’s all about doing things you genuinely enjoy that will benefit you in the long run.

Rest,Rest,Rest...😴 If you live with chronic pa Rest,Rest,Rest...😴

If you live with chronic pain or illness, you come to realise how important rest actually is❗️

It's the one thing we need to keep going.

However, in a world where 'maximising your time' and productivity hacks are shoved down our throats, particularly at this time of year (New year, new me and all that shit). It's easy to feel you're wasting time or not doing enough by prioritising rest.

But I'm here to say fuck that! 🖕🏾

Rest when we need it can NEVER be a waste of time!

It's an investment...! Particularly if you have pain or any health condition!

Rest is our time to destress, detach and escape from all things thrown our way, health or life-related.

Let's stop punishing ourselves, or feeling guilty about resting. Instead, let's consider it the best investment we'll ever make... into ourselves!😉
